I’m Rachel, founder and creative director of The Left Shoe Wedding Company.
I live in Redditch, UK, with my partner and our Alaskan Malamute - Miska, which means 'Little Bear'. (She's not a husky!) They are my absolute world.
I’m a lover of animals (especially dogs), music (and singing along loudly to it), tea (freshly steeped from tea leaves of course), and food (especially anything with a bit of spice!)
I’ve always been a little bit of a hobby fiend! Trust me, I’m not exaggerating!
I’ve spent a lot of my free time attempting to create and learn new things, from clothes (and yes this does include knitting), to guitar, photography, filmmaking and screenwriting, painting, sketching and baking.
It’s only recently I realised this need I had to be constantly doing something, was my creative spirit trying to fight its way into the limelight!
The poor thing had been squashed down for years, whilst I constantly told myself to be sensible and stop daydreaming about a creative career.
Unfortunately, nothing excited me about the prospect of a sensible job! I seemed to be stuck in between finding the right creative job, or training to do something that was deemed to be ‘normal’.
In fact, it may surprise many of my friends and family that I decided to pursue a career in the wedding industry! I was never the girl who played weddings or the teen who dreamed of the fairy tale love story.
I shockingly didn’t watch either of the royal weddings! In fact, my mum has often been heard to say things like, ‘I don’t see the point of weddings’. So, it really is quite amazing how I ended up in the industry at all!
Well, it all started a few years ago whilst I was a manager of a well-known coffee shop, (yes, I do make an excellent cup of coffee!) and I was pondering my life and career options.
Whilst I took great pleasure in my ability to draw pictures with milk, I knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do forever.
I started to explore online courses and tried a few different ones, including journalism and marketing, but it was only when I completed an online event course, I found there was a little fire in my belly that couldn’t be doused.
It was a passion I couldn’t ignore, and I was soon a proud student of The Event Academy.
After a full-on course, I landed a job in a hotel running events, and before I knew it I’d tumbled head-first into the world of weddings. I LOVED IT!
As my passion grew, so did my curiosity. I adored doing the weddings, but I had started to wonder how they could be done a little differently.
I started to look at the weddings from my own perspective and I realised the wedding venue packages were not the type of wedding I would want for myself.
They just felt so recycled and overdone! So, I did what I do best! I looked to further my education and found The Wedding Academy. My world was opened-up to the wonderful diverse wonders of the wedding industry.
It was like a lightbulb went off in my head, and I was suddenly looking at the prospect of a career in wedding planning and design! I began to see that weddings didn’t have to follow the same formats; they could really be whatever you wanted them to be!
So, The Left Shoe Wedding Company was born, with the aim of helping couples who feel the same as me. For those who feel cold at the thought of a wedding venue package, and who are striving to be original and celebrate their uniqueness with pride.
We’re all different, and whilst I may have had some difficulties with it as a child, I’m so proud to be labelled an odd-ball. It’s what makes me, me! It’s what my friends, family and partner love about me. So, I implore you to do the same. Embrace what makes you, you! And inject it with pride into one of the biggest celebrations of your life.
I will help to inspire, create, and nurture your unique and indie wedding, and together we’ll bring about the independent wedding revolution.
